Backing Up

  • Posted on August 31, 2007 at 9:51 am

I’m constantly fighting my computer lately, trying to find lost e-mail messages and stuff that I’ve saved. I noticed that sites offer ways to make your Outlook backup so that you don’t have this problem. I decided to peek at a few of the options and see if it would help me.

I always have lots of email rules set up and my multiple email accounts are a headache to reset. This backup looks like it might work well. This site has a free demo, too, so you can see how well it works before using it. And since I’ve worked in the field of computers, helping others train on software and such, I’m all about WIZARDS and this program has one. Basically it walks you, step-by-step, through the process of backing things up.

Hey, it’s worth a try. I’ve had to set up my email accounts twice since moving back to Texas and I still don’t know why they were lost in the first place. That’s a mystery I might not solve but at least if it happens again, I’ll have something to fall back on.

When Kids Fly?

Recently I came across a book series by James Patterson called Maximum Ride.  Not only does this book call out to the pure imagination that I’ve always had when reading, but it drew my daughter in as well.  She was hooked from the first chapter and finished this rather hefty book (for her age) in only a few days.  I started reading it with her and as I prepared for my schedule to change with my upcoming surgery I realized I needed to finish the book before that date.

The book is about 6 kids on an extreme adventure…and they can do amazing things to your soul as they struggle to overcome troubles and work through friendships and daily struggles.

It didn’t take any pushing at all because the book grabs you from the start and pulls you through action and adventure with every turn of the page.  Emotions rise up in you that you haven’t felt in ages.  Pictures come to mind of the scenes in the book with vivid detail.  I truly did enjoy this book and I find it will capture the minds of many youngsters and teens, as it already seems to have done.

Not only does the book have a website that’s incredible to visit but there are MP3′s, videos, a myspace page, forums, commercials and even mention of a blog within the book.  Is it really out there?  You’ll have to read for yourself and find out what new adventures come before Max in this series of books (the full title is Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports.)

I think too often we get our lives intertwined with online activities and we forget to encourage our children to pick up a good book and get lost in the action.  I’m very glad that I got my daughter involved in this series with me.  It allowed us to share opinions and talk about life using some of the book topics.  I love that there’s so much online activity about the book along with just the printed words we read.

Definitely one to add to your list of books to share with your kids (or, if you’re like me, a kid at heart, read it for yourself!)

Remotely Cheap

Finding ways to gain remote access to my home system from different locations has proven to be harder than I realized. There are so many options out there. One of the sites I saw that offered a more affordable way to do this was RemotePC.

I tried a few of the competitors and they were good but they cost so much for someone that only wants to access a picture to show family members or a song that I forgot to download to my phone. A small business or personal use program is more of what I was seeking. Some way to reach my system but not break the bank or require a yearly fee to use.

A 30-day free trial was first. I used the program and compared it to others that I had used in the past. The main site was helpful when I had questions and the UI was easy to understand. I hate having to ‘figure out’ what certain icons mean and this program didn’t have that issue at all. They also had a nice demo on the site (I love those, don’t ask me why) that walked me through the basic setup and explained the idea behind “remote access”.

I did find out it’s also Vista capable (I don’t use that just yet) and offers the same “remote meeting” setup that some of the other, more expensive programs, offered. I don’t have a use for that but if I grow my business more, that might come in handy.

Surgery Success

I entered surgery on the 22nd and I returned home from the hospital to recover yesterday.  I’ve had one day home and I’m already gaining strength although I’m quite slow moving.

I talked earlier in my blog about having endometriosis and apparently it was quite severe once they got in to perform the surgery.  I had other issues causing me pain that were taken care of as well during my surgery.  I’m thankful that is past me and I’m looking to move forward in my life as soon as I can recover.

I’ve talked some of starting a new blog or relocating.  I’m still considering this.  I will keep this one here for my projects, basic information, paid posts and archives of my past, but I do feel a new blog might be in order soon.  I’ll let those near me know where to find that as soon as steps are made.  It’ll be a while I’m sure.

I’m still fighting the decision so we’ll see how things go, you know?  I love my space here and the friends I’ve made.  I treasure the past that has made me who I am.  I will hang onto that not to hurt more but to heal from that past.  That is my ultimate goal.

I have some great reviews coming to my blog soon that I’ve been participating in.  I’ve read a few books and will introduce them here on my blog as part of a program I’m involved in.  I also still participate in Pay Per Post still and I still write actively over at Techie Diva (love that job!).

So if you’re wanting to keep up with things best bet is to visit here for now.  I’ll be recovering over the next few weeks and will take the time to post updates here with reviews and other posts.  I’m still active and plan on staying that way.  Thanks, Jane, for checking up on me…and countless others that have sent emails during my transition/move to Texas.

Time to rest again or I’ll get in trouble for having the laptop in my lap while laying down.  My daughter has been on my case to heal and rest, I’ll follow the orders of my mini-nurse and do just that.

Bad Behavior has blocked 119 access attempts in the last 7 days.
